  • If you use the long, circular route you will notice a great difference between the two villages:-
  • Wetwang has developed along each side of the wide village street whereas Huggate has developed around its large green.
  • Wetwang has a small attractive church, unusual in plan and with a sturdy 13th-century tower.  In contrast, the church at Huggate has traceried battlements, strange gargoyles and a tall spire.
  • Wetwang is expanding with some recent housing developments and several craft and antique shops, whereas Huggate is still a functional farming community with a quiet atmosphere.
  • The short walk from Wetwang is along green lanes and through a dale, whilst the short stroll from Huggate follows a section of the 'Wolds Way' across the high Wolds before following two attractive dales.
  • For the long walk, you may use either the green lanes heading south from the village, or the field path and then the path through Thorn Dale.  Follow field headlands across Tibthorpe Wold with its fine open landscape (see 'Features of Interest' below).
  • At Foxcovert Hall, you may use the road to Huggate or follow the track into Oxiands Dale with the attractive Oakland Plantation to your right.  The next three miles are all along dale bottoms where sheep will be your only company and you will hear birdsong from the woodlands high on the dale side.
  • Rabbit Dale and Cow Dale are typical dry Wolds dales but even in summer they are dark and secretive.  At the end of Cow Dale, follow paths across fields to reach a fairly busy road.  Please take care when crossing the road to return to Wetwang.

Features of Interest
- When crossing Tibthorpe Wold, remember that only 300 years ago this whole area was one vast open sheep-walk without fields or hedges. In one of the fields to the south of the path stood 'Christ Cross', a large embankment cross where St. Paulinus was reputed to have preached in 620 AD. Unfortunately, like so many of the crosses, tumuli and old earthworks of the Wolds, it has long since been 'ploughed out'.

- The interesting names like Hawold Sheepwalk, Foxcovert Hall, Rabbit Dale and Cow Dale all reflect the history and character of the area.
