Explore what has to be one of the most scenic walks in the East Riding.  You will pass Middleton Road Plantation (the subject of David Hockney's huge painting "Bigger Trees near Warter").  There are also long views of the Hull skyline from the B1246 to Farberry Garth, and the wide, open Great Dugdale where you may see buzzards and red kites soaring and wheeling overhead.

  • Start from Farberry Garth and enter the public footpath at Dugdale Fields, leading towards Warter village.  Follow the path around the field edge and after about 250 yards pass through a metal kissing gate into Great Dugdale.
  • The valley is open access so you can wander at will within the marked area.  Otherwise follow the valley bottom all the way to the Warter road.  Turn left along the road, but take very good care as there is no footway.  You are advised to walk on the far (right-hand side) of the road so as to face oncoming traffic.
  • At the first road on your right turn in and climb the hill.  Stay on the road, still climbing, to a bend in the road.  Go straight, along a bridleway around field edges, and past Ringlands Plantation.
  • Drop steeply down into Lavender Dale, another open access area.  Head up the valley, into Brig Dale and through woodland to Blanch Farm.
  • In the 'centre' of the farm, follow the farm road to the right, all the way to the B1246 again.  Cross the road and continue along the field edges to Farberry Garth and the start.
