  • From the 'layby' take the unmade road, known as Swinescaife Hill, to the west until you come to a Yorkshire Wolds Way sign directing you down into Comber Dale.
  • Turn left at the bottom through a strange looking metal gate (a stock-proof Bridlegate) and along a bridleway past Drewton Springs and across an old railway bridge.
  • Shortly after the bridge turn right along a path leading uphill past Diamond Cottage and the wooded Austin's Dale.
  • Pass round the small plantation - usually a mass of wild flowers in spring.
  • Arriving at the B1230 turn right again and walk along the verge to another Wolds Way sign.
  • Turn right yet again, and walk around the field edge and into East Dale.
  • Descend through the wood, turning right to follow a grassy track, still in the trees, until it crosses the former railway line.  This was the former Hull-Barnsley Railway
  • Pass through the metal gate, to climb back up the hill that you came down earlier.
  • Rejoin the unmade road to return to the start.

Features of Interest
The Hull and Barnsley Railway (H&BR) was opened on 20 July 1885. On incorporation and until 1905 it was the Hull, Barnsley and West Riding Junction Railway and Dock Company. The projected total length was 66 miles, but as built it did not reach Barnsley. Its Alexandra Dock in Hull opened 16 July 1885. Various joint lines were operated in conjunction with the HBR.
There are two tunnels which carried the railway under the chalk, Weedley and Sugar Loaf. Both tunnels are 132 yards long and are located on the grounds of the Drewton Estate. Weedley Tunnel located near the local beauty spot of Weedley Springs. Sugar Loaf has unfortunately been partially back-filled.
