Distance (Miles)
Distance (Kilometres)
  • This route can be used alone or as a continuation of route W18.
  • The route is upon the Bubwith Rail Trail and rural bridleways.  The Trail is on the Definitive Map as a footpath but there is permissive use for riding and cycling.
  • If using this route alone and not as a continuation of W18, start north of Holme-on-Spalding-Moor on the Bubwith Rail Trail.  To access the Trail from Holme-on-Spalding-Moor, take Station Lane or Spen Lane to the bend where they meet at the Just Peters Inn.  Take the track on the opposite side of the road for a very short distance (20 yards) and turn right onto the Trail.
  • (*)  Continue on the Trail across the north side of Holme-on-Spalding-Moor.  You cross a stream, pass the Dale Farm Foods Factory to the right and then continue on over the mown grass of the Old Station House.  Continue along the Trail and pass through Harswell Station, crossing another minor road.
  • You now come to the end of the rail trail and are at the A163 (GR. 840406).  Turn left, heading north, and ride along the wide verge for about 25 yards.  Next turn left along a headland bridleway with a hedge on your left.  Follow this to Brouncey Farm and past the buildings.  Turn right along the farm drive, which is still a bridleway, and ride 1½ miles to Shiptonthorpe.
  • You are now at the A1079 trunk road (GR.851433) which can be very busy so cross with care.  Go directly over this road and follow the quiet lane towards Londesborough for about 2½ miles.  Take the first road right (GR.865453) or detour into this charming village.
  • From the right turn, ride along the lane which skirts the estate up to the roundabout on the A163.  Turn left onto the grass verge and ride to the picnic area in the lay-by next to the garage.
  • Note: ride W18 continues from the point marked (*).
  • This linear ride is taken from the book "Humberside on Horseback" and is included by kind permission of the British Horse Society.
