  • Although other parts of the East Riding might be considered more "chocolate-box" pretty, don't be put off from exploring this interesting area.
  • From your parking place, ride west along the back lane of Burton Pidsea and turn right (GR.244311) into Jubilee Lane. Continue until you come to a T-junction (GR.244314) and turn left to ride along the main road for a short distance.  Go over a bridge and take the turn to the right (GR.243315) which is signposted to Danthorpe.  (The verge here is well-used and the lane is quiet.)
  • At the white cottages (GR.240325) turn left and follow the clearly-defined bridleway that takes you down a short green lane, past farm buildings, through two bridlegates and over a stream to St. Lawrence's church at Elstronwick.
  • Continue to ride straight ahead past the Crown and Anchor pub.  After passing the pub take the second turning on the right (GR.225321) towards the old windmill.  Just past the windmill on the left look for, and follow, the signposted bridleway.  Use this bridleway to cross a grass field (usually containing stock), to pass through two gates and then to join a waymarked headland leading to a road (GR.212322).
  • Turn right at the road.  There are two ways to go through the village of Lelley, but you turn right (GR.209324) on the outskirts.  This avoids most of the traffic and brings you out on the north side of the Stag Inn.
  • At the Inn turn right onto the Humbleton road and ride for just a few yards past the cottages on the left.  Turn immediately left (GR.208328) along the side of the last cottage to ride upon the waymarked bridleway.
  • Follow this bridleway straight through Sproatley Grange and into the village of Sproatley.  (Vehicles on Sproatley's roads are unlikely to travel fast or be large.)  When you come to the junction of the B1240 and B1238, turn right (GR.192344) towards Aldborough and follow the road for about ¾ mile going out of the village.  Turn right onto the well-defined byway (GR.202350).  (There are several sharp turns but the way is apparent.)
  • Follow this byway until it meets the road.  Turn right (GR.215336) and then almost immediately turn left to ride back along the road to Elstronwick Mill.  From the Mill you retrace your steps back to Burton Pidsea village hall car park.
  • This is the end of the 12-mile long trail.  If you wish to do the 15-mile long ride then continue as follows:-
  • Pass the car park and your starting point and turn right (GR.250310).  Ride past the "No Through Road" signs and you will see a clearly-defined clay road known locally as "Mucky Lane".  This is marked as a bridleway on your right (GR.253309).  Turn along here and follow the track for about a mile until you find it suddenly bends to the left and then divides.  Take the left turn and follow the well-defined track to Elm Tree Farm (GR.261296) which stands on the edge of the low-lying Carrs.  Ride past the front of the farm and on along the lane to return to the village and your parking place.
  • This circular ride is taken from the book "Humberside on Horseback" and is included by kind permission of the British Horse Society.

Features of Interest
- The starting point of Burton Pidsea is a largely unspoilt place. The village boasts some of the oldest and prettiest houses in the area but they are tucked away out of sight of the main village street. The church in the village is called St. Peter and St. Paul and the local pub is a very old and well-established inn.

- Elstronwick is more of a hamlet than a village but has some pretty cottages.

- Lelley is another small place but has some interesting architectural features.
