  • From your parking place at the Elmtree Tack Shop, ride onto the B1362, turn right and almost immediately turn right again down a lane towards Roos, heading due north.  (This lane is visible from your starting point.)
  • Just before the village you reach a bridge over a main drain.  Turn left and go through the gate onto the bridleway.  Keep the bank of the drain on your right and ride straight on to the edge of Fox Covert.  Go through another gate and follow the drain bank for three miles.
  • After about 2½ miles you will notice a farm quite close on the left and a flat tractor bridge of sleepers to the right.  This bridge is the link to the Burton Pidsea Trail (E24).  If you do not want to follow the Burton Pidsea Trail, go to the next bullet point below.  If you want to follow the Burton Pidsea trail, cross the bridge, turn right along the drain bank and follow it for 50 yards.  Turn left, keeping the hedge to the left.  You must now ride a straight line, at one point leaving the headland and riding across the field to arrive at a cross track with a hedge and headland in front of you.  Turn right and follow the track to Elm Tree Farm and the metalled road to Burton Pidsea.
  • To continue along the main route do not cross the bridge but continue on the drain bank to meet the B1362 at a brick bridge (GR.254280)**.  To shorten your ride at this point follow set of instructions (a) or (b) at the foot of this page.  Otherwise, go to the bullet point directly below.
  • Turn right (GR.254280) and ride along the road for 2½ miles to Burstwick.  At the outskirts of the village turn right at the garage*** and ride to a T-junction where you turn right (GR.226286).  Ride over the bridge and turn immediately left onto a bridleway with the large Burstwick Drain on your left.  Follow the Drain until you get to the old railway line.  Turn left onto the line and ride east, crossing the road at the old Burstwick Station.  Ride on to the next road crossing where there is a small parking area.  From this parking area, south of Burstwick, ride along the old railway line for another four miles.  (You will pass ponds used for fishing and water-skiing on the left.)
  • At Keyingham you leave the old railway line for a few hundred yards as part of the track through the station has been sold.  You need to turn left and take the leafy lane running parallel with the track to rejoin the line again after the station.  Upon leaving Keyingham, ride towards Ottringham and Carr House Farm on your left.  (Take care with the anti-traffic folding barriers where the farm drive crosses the lane.)
  • **Ride directly through Ottringham Station and into a green tunnel of vegetation, which will take even a very big horse!  When you come to a fallen log and a farm crossing, leave the railway line and take the first track on the left (GR.282251).  Ride past the end of the wood staying on the track and negotiate several 90 degree turns until you arrive at a green gate at Churchlands Farm.  Go through the gate and on up the main farm drive to meet a road (GR.296260).  Turn left and then left again to return to your parking spot.
  • Shorter route (a): at the brick bridge turn left and ride along the road to Halsham.  At the Halsham Arms pub turn right and ride in a southerly direction towards Ottringham.  When you get to the railway at Ottringham station, turn left and rejoin the main route at **.
  • Shorter route (b): turn left at the garage and, when you reach a T-junction, turn left and ride into Burstwick.  Ride on through the village past two pubs and into open country.  In a short time you will come to the old railway line.  Turn left along here and rejoin the route at ***.
  • This circular ride is taken from the book "Humberside on Horseback" and is included by kind permission of the British Horse Society.

Features of Interest
Roos is about 2 miles from the sea and has become mainly a commuter village since the Second World War. Its name means marsh or moorland and is possibly of British origin. Owstwick which is part of the parish may be an Anglian and Scandinavian hybrid, and perhaps means 'eastern dairy farm', ie. east of Elstronwick. (from British History Online)
